The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has cautioned Nigerians against purchasing unbranded cereals from open markets.
The Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, delivered this message during the Agency’s Food Safety and Applied Nutrition Directorate Stakeholder Engagement event with food sector representatives in Lagos.
Adeyeye also issued a warning to food manufacturing companies, stating that NAFDAC would not tolerate the infiltration of poorly disposed expired or stolen products into the market through scavengers at waste dump sites. This practice poses a risk to innocent consumers, particularly children.
She underscored that products that have undergone regulatory procedures are packaged with NAFDAC registration numbers for identification.
“When a product is not certified by NAFDAC it is not advisable that anybody should consume it. The unbranded products in the market, do not have NAFDAC registration/marketing authorisation number.”
‘’We cannot speak to the safety of unbranded food in the open market. We do not know where they have come from. We don’t know anything about the expiry date. We cannot trace,” she said.
