The United Nations has confirmed that the population of mankind will hit 8 billion by 15 November, 2022.
At the moment, the world is estimated to have a population of over 7 billion.
The Media Associate of the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) in Nigeria, Hajiya Kori Habib confirmed this to News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Monday, on the occasion of the World Population Day(WPD).
The NAN said the day has its 2022 theme as, “A World of 8 billion: Towards a Resilient Future for All –Harnessing Opportunities and Ensuring Rights and Choices for All.”
In the statement released by Hajiya Habib, “understanding these shifts is critical to harnessing opportunities and mitigating potential downsides.
“Roughly two-thirds of the world’s population now live in a country or area with below-replacement fertility, or fewer than 2.1 births per woman. Fertility rates are at a historic low.”
The statement also said India will surpass China as the world’s most populated country in the year 2023.
The WPD was established by the Governing Council of the UN Development Programme in 1989. It is an annual event observed on July 11 to raise awareness on global population issues.
