Ever seen an elephant give birth? Well, in this video obtained by Switch Nigeria, a female elephant could be seen giving birth to a calf.
As the keeper of the elephant hung around, the big animal opened its legs and tried pushing the calf out.
Female elephants give birth while standing. The birth itself lasts only a few minutes. A single calf is usually born head and forelegs first. Twins have been documented, but are extremely rare.
Like goats and other mammals, calves come out wrapped up in the amniotic sac. In the case of this video, the owners had to rupture the sac for the calf to come out.
Elephants are known to kick their new-born calves to get them to stand up, when they fail to do so by their own.
