Nigerian international forward Victor Osimhen scored the second of the night for his side Napoli as the league leaders defeated Salernitana 0-2 in a Serie A fixture on Saturday.
After a cagey start into the game by Spalletti’s men at the Stadio Arechi in Salerno, the league leaders then went in front just at the last seconds of the first half through Italian defender, Givonanni Di Lorenzo.
Victor Osimhen then sealed the win for the away side three minutes after the break.
The 24-year-old attacker connected with a rebound in front of Salernitana’s goalkeeper Ochoa inside the box before firing into the right side of the net to score his 13th of the season.
The goal puts the inform striker on the cause of breaking a 125-year old record of the Italian top-flight league for becoming the African player to finish the season as the competition’s top scorer as he leagues the pack with 13 goals, four more than second place Latauro Martinez who has scored nine goals this term.
With his 13 goals and 3 assists from 15 games this season, Victor Osimhen is only one goal away from surpassing his total league goals tally in Europe top five league; 2022-23 – 13 goals and counting, 2021-22 – 14 goals and 2020-21 – 10 goals.
Also, only Erling Haaland of Manchester City (22) and Harry Kane of Tottenham Hotspur (15) have scored more goals in Europe’s top five leagues this season than the former Lille striker.
The victory over Salemaritina means Napoli will now go into the halfway stage of the season with 50 points and a 12-point lead at the top of the table.
