A student of the University of Cross River State was on Thursday afternoon shot dead by unidentified gunmen on the Calabar campus of the university.
The Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mr Onen Onen, confirmed the incident.
“A student was shot. The Vice Chancellor will issue a statement about it,” he said and declined to comment further.
It was gathered the gunmen drove into the school in a Toyota Sienna car and headed straight to where the victim was with his friends and shot him dead
According to a source, “The incident took place right in front of me and my friends. We were strolling past the Engineering Faculty when we saw some students sitting in a group and chatting and from no where a Sienna car drove towards them and one of the students stood up an ran. Some young men stepped out of the car and chased after him.
“After they shot him from behind and when he fell, they went close to confirm if he was dead before firing a final shot on his chest and went ahead to use his shirt to cover his face.”
The source added that the gunmen took the dead student’s bag and went into their car and drove off.
“We suspect one of those persons he was chatting with was providing those hoodlums the information about where to locate him and when they came he knew he was the person they were looking for prompting him to take to his heels.”
It was gathered that the gunmen succeeded in driving out of the school premises before the institution’s security team comprising policemen swung into action.
It was too late when they locked the gate and began searching people leaving the campus.
The spokesperson for the state police, SP Irene Ugbo, did not take her calls as at the time of filing this report.
