A black American man, Austin Amos was apprehended by men of the New York Police Department 101 Precinct on Thursday for the alleged murder of one Kutin Gyimah.
Austin, a 20-year-old man together with four others allegedly attacked and killed the 52-year-old taxi driver who is a Ghanaian.
The police also have in custody, 20-year-old Nickolas Porter for gang assault and theft charges and for his involvement.
The police has also issued a plea of information on the whereabouts of 3 women also involved in the dastardly murder of Mr. Gyimah.
According to a CCTV footage, the five-man gang smacked and stumped Mr. Gyimah which resulted in him falling backwards, hitting his head on the ground.
While he laid down on the ground in Far Rockaway on Saturday grasping for his life, the gang made fun of him as they walked away.
The suspect confessed that Mr. Gyimah, who is a father of 4, went after the five after they refused paying for their ride.
Amos and Porter turned themselves in at the 101st Precinct on Wednesday night after a plea for information was put out by the NYPD.The 20-year-old was accompanied by his mother when he turned himself in at the precinct on Wednesday night.
Meanwhile Porter faces gang assault and theft charges. Investigators are still on the lookout for the three other teen girls, who are thought to be aged 13, 15, and 16, involved.
Amos also has six prior arrests, including for robbery, criminal mischief, criminal contempt and sexual misconduct.
The victim, Mr. Gyimah later succumbed to his injuries which included severe head trauma, and died.
“He was a good, good man. He was my backbone. I’m lost right now. My children’s hero,” Gyimah’s wife Abigail Barwuah, who could not hold back her tears, said.
A GoFundMe account has been set up for Gyimah’s funeral, and for the support of his widow and her four kids. So far, $109,600 has been raised.
