In the category of men’s coaches, Scolani was up for nomination alongside Carlo Ancelotti of Real Madrid and Pep Guardiola of Manchester City. Scolani led Argentina to their third FIFA World Cup victory.
Guardiola led Manchester City to their fourth Premier League trophy in five years, while Ancelotti led Real Madrid to victories in the UEFA Champions League and La Liga last season, giving them a double.
In the women’s category, Wiegman was named to the final list along with Sonia Bompastor and Pia Sundhage. Wiegman led the Three Lionesses of England to their first-ever major championship when they won the 2022 Women’s European Championship on home soil.
After leading the Netherlands women’s national team to victory in 2017 and 2020, the Dutch manager won the prestigious award twice. In 2017 he did so after winning the title.
Sonia Bompastor and Pia Sundhage, the other two managers on the list, respectively led Brazil to the Copa America Femenina and Lyon to the French league title last year.
Thibaut Courtois of Real Madrid, Emiliano Martinez of Argentina, who won the World Cup, Yassine Bounou of Morocco, who recorded the most clean sheets at the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup, and others are contenders for the Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper Award.
The three finalists in the women’s division are Chilean goalkeeper Christiane Endler, who won the UEFA Champions League and French league with Lyon last season, and German goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger of Chelsea, a European championship silver medalist and Women’s Super League champion.
Mary Earps of Manchester United, who won the European Championship with England last year and created history this year by being the first goalie to accumulate 50 clean sheets in the FA Women’s Super League, is also included on the list.
On February 27, at a gathering in Paris, France, the winners of each category, including the Best Player in the men’s and women’s divisions, will be declared.
