Josko Gvardiol’s second-half header cancelled out Riyad Mahrez’s opener as Manchester City drew their Champions League last-16 first leg 1-1 at RB Leipzig.
Manchester City made three changes for their Champions League last-16 first leg in Germany.
Kevin de Bruyne and Aymeric Laporte were both ruled out by illness and Phil Foden also dropped out of the side that drew 1-1 at Nottingham Forest on Saturday, with starts for Manuel Akanji, Nathan Ake and Riyad Mahrez.
Chelsea-bound Christopher Nkunku was named among the Leipzig substitutes with the striker only recently returned from an ankle injury sustained in November.
City’s domination was rewarded after 27 minutes when Xaver Schlager played a careless pass 40 yards from his own goal.
Jack Grealish pounced on the loose ball and found Mahrez, who swept home left-footed from just inside the penalty area.
Leipzig’s improved second-half show was rewarded with an equaliser after 70 minutes.
Marcel Halstenberg’s cross was met by Josko Gvardiol, who rose above Dias to head home from close range.
City claimed Gvardiol had fouled Dias but the goal stood.
City thought they should have had a penalty deep into injury time for a handball, however, the referee, nor VAR, saw anything wrong and the match finished 1-1 with everything to play for in the second leg.
