Six of the passengers who were kidnapped during the raid on the Tom Ikimi Train Station in the state’s Igueben Local Government Area have reportedly been freed, according to the Edo State Police Command.
In the incident on January 7, numerous people who were waiting to board a train headed for Warri, Delta State, were kidnapped. Unknown numbers of the travelers suffered injuries as a result of the incident.
Many passengers were kidnapped during the incident, which was allegedly carried out by suspected herders, while some were shot.
In a previous statement regarding the attack, Edo State Police spokesman Nwabuzor claimed that the assailants entered the train station while brandishing AK-47s and fired randomly into the air before kidnapping a large number of would-be passengers.
He added that security personnel were pursuing the kidnappers.
Godwin Okpe, the station manager, Ikhayere, the head of security, Victor Osarobho, a resident of the Igueben village, and Akhere, the ticket agent, were among those taken.
Chris Osa Nehikhare, the Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, spoke to a news conference on Sunday afternoon and referred to the occurrence as the state government’s most trying time.
Nearly a year had passed since an attack on a train traveling between Abuja and Kaduna on March 28, 2022, which killed roughly 14 passengers. After being held captive for several months, about 63 passengers were eventually freed.
