According to renowned political economist, Professor Pat Utomi, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, was discovered by angry Nigerian youths who were sick of the dreadful situation of their nation.
He claimed that while young Nigerians have been fleeing the country in pursuit of better opportunities abroad, those who are left behind are battling for the country’s advancement by promoting Obi to the presidency.
These ideas were communicated by Professor Utomi in a discussion with The Niche.
“The young of Nigeria, tired enough of the structure and nature of Nigeria, seeing it denying them opportunities decided to respond first by leaving the nation,” Utomi added. This is known as the “Japa phenomenon.”
He further claimed that through protests organized under the hashtag #EndSARS to demand an end to police violence, young people lodged their first complaints against the government.
“Those who could were fleeing,” he continued. Many people were dying in the deserts while searching for work anywhere else besides Nigeria.
“Then some people made the decision that it was time to fight back. And ENDSARS was their first organization to take up the battle against police brutality. And the state brutally dealt with them.”
Without saying much, they came to the decision that they would band together, organize, and use the political system to overthrow those who were oppressing them and those who kept their hands on the shoulders of the generation after them.
“So what are now known as the support groups appeared out of nowhere. They opted to use Peter Obi as their vehicle after learning about him from what he was saying. “
“And that vehicle gained speed. The momentum that vehicle created was intended to convey to the following generation that there is hope; by banding together, you can put an end to your agony and get rid of those who drag you down. “
“At first, they thought that everyone was joking. When they eventually realized it wasn’t a joke any longer, they turned nasty. They became hazardous.”
