Ahead of the general election break, the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday nine fixtures continued with two fixtures on Monday as Gombe United and Nasarawa United upset the odds to record victory on home soil.
Both fixtures which were in group A, saw Remo Stars and Plateau United failing to capitalize on their rivals slip up for the super six qualification places.
Gombe United scored a stoppage time penalty to beat Plateau United 3-2 at the Pantami Stadium in Gombe state on Monday evening.
Anayor Ogbonna put the hosts in front in the 12th minutes with Albert Hilary restoring parity for the away side six minutes later before Rahman Olarewaju’s 23rd minute strike gave the home team a 2-1 advantage going into the break.
Moses Adikwu leveled matters for the away side again just two minutes after the restart as a the game was interrupted by the home fans late on before a 90+5 minute penalty kick which was converted by Muhammadu Souley gave the hosts a 3-2 victory and moved them to sixth on the group while Plateau United remained in fourth, one point behind Akwa United.
Nasarawa United defeated Remo Stars 2-0 at the new Jos stadium in the other game on Monday evening.
Joshua John gave the hosts the lead with just eight minutes on the clock before an Emmanuel Ogbole’s strike two minutes into the second half sealed all three points for the struggling club in Jos who moved from 10th to eighth place on the league table while Remo Stars remained in fifth, a point adrift of super six qualification places.
