Nigeria premier football league (NPFL) Matchday eight action resumed on Thursday as Uche Collin’s early strike helped Akwa United returned back to winning ways with a 1-0 victory over Gombe United at the Nest of Champions Stadium in Uyo.
The Group A fixture which was played on Thursday evening saw coach Ayodeji Ayeni make one change to the starting eleven that started on Matchday seven in Maiduguri as Winger Emmanuel Ugwuka makes his first start taking the place of captain Ubong Friday who started on the bench.
After a bright start, the hosts took an early lead with just eight minutes on the clock through Uche Collins who sent a brilliant header into the net from James Ajako’s cross.
Akwa United pushed for another goal after putting their noses in front but was denied by Gombe United goalkeeper who was excellent all through the game as the home side recorded their third home win of the season.
The Akwa Ibom based club who will next face shooting stars in Ibadan on matchday nine also recorded their seventh straight home victory over Gombe United and moved to fourth in group A on goal difference while Gombe United remained on seventh on the log.
