France star Man, Kylian Mbappe, after an outstanding World Cup campaign, won the top goal scorer award ahead of Lionel Messi after scoring a Hat-trick in the final on Sunday.
The 23-year-old Frenchman who turns 24 in two days time, scored his 6th, 7th and 8th world cup goals in a 3-3 draw against Argentina at the Lusail Stadium in Doha.
Mbappe started the tournament as one of the favorites to win the price after his current run of form for club side Paris Saint Germain ( PSG) where he has notched in 12 goals and two assists in 14 league appearances and also losing out to the Golden Boot Award to England’s Harry Kane in Russia 2018 by two goals.
His 8th goals at this year’s FIFA World Cup in Qatar took his total World Cup tally to 12 goals in just two world cups having netted four at the previous edition where France won it.
Mbappe’s World Cup goal tally now puts him just four goals behind record scorer Miroslav Klose who scored 16 goals from four different World Cups dating back to 2002 in Brazil till South Africa 2010 where he represented Germany.
He also became the highest goal-scorer in the history of World Cup finals, having scored once in France’s triumphant 4-2 victory against Croatia in Russia 2018.
Kylian Mbappé is also the first player in more than 50 years to score three goals in a World Cup final and only the second to achieve the feat since Geoff Hurst who did so at the 1966 World Cup as the Three lions of England defeated West Germany in London 4-2.
