According to Abubakar Malami, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, President Muhammadu Buhari is resolved to make sure that his successor is elected in a peaceful, credible, free, and fair process.
The AGF stated during a meeting hosted yesterday in Abuja by the branch of the National Association of Judiciary Correspondents, NAJUC, that President Buhari quickly granted his approval to the modified Electoral Act because he was determined to ensure the credibility of the upcoming general elections.
He claims that one of the most notable aspects of the revised electoral law is the legal support it gave the Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC, to use the required technology for the polls.
The AGF, whose speech was read by his media assistant Dr Jubril Gwandu, insisted that Nigeria’s democracy was not linear and emphasised that citizens not only had important roles to play in the democratic process but also needed to abstain from all vices that could threaten the advancements made thus far.
“In particular, the media are paramount in voter education so that the Nigerian citizens are enlightened to resist the urge of selling their votes and not to allow themselves to be used to commit electoral offences or cause violence before, during and after elections,” Malami added.
