Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has expressed confidence that the state will lead the way in achieving energy self-sufficiency in Nigeria.
He made this statement during the inauguration of transformers in the Ona-Ara Local Government area of the state.
The transformers, a 500KVA unit at Olorunda Ogunsola Community and a 300KVA unit at Idi-Obi area, were generously donated by Chief Dotun Sanusi, the Otun-Apesinola of Ibadanland and Chairman of Ilaji Hotels and Sports Resort. These transformers will provide electricity to 15 communities, with eight falling under Olorunda Ogunsola and five under Idi-Obi.
Makinde said: “Now that the fifth Alteration Bill No. 33, Devolution of Powers (National Grid System) has been signed into law, states can enter the electricity generation business.
“With the new law, states can now generate, transmit and distribute electricity in areas covered by the national grid. We will explore the opportunity.
“In the community of states in Nigeria, Oyo State will be number one to attain energy sufficiency.”
