Ballon d’Or winner, Karim Benzema has announced his retirement from international football from the The French team.
15 years after making his debut, the Real Madrid man hung up his boots for France after scoring 37 goals in 97 appearances for the runners up of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Benzema who turned 35 today, December 19, left the World Cup after suffering a thigh injury during his first training session in Qatar. He also was not a part of the 2018 World Cup winning side either.
J’ai fait les efforts et les erreurs qu’il fallait pour être là où je suis aujourd’hui et j’en suis fier !
J’ai écrit mon histoire et la nôtre prend fin. #Nueve pic.twitter.com/7LYEzbpHEs— Karim Benzema (@Benzema) December 19, 2022
Benzema’s cryptic tweet was interpreted by experts to mean he is hanging up his boots.
Despite missing 5½ years of international football, Benzema remains 5th in France’s all time top goal scorer list.
Mbappe who scored 3 goals and a penalty during the FIFA World Cup final shoot out yesterday, is already just a goal behind him.
