The Imo State government has been advised by the Nigerian Bar Association to be more careful about the security of people and property and to bolster security in and around all court facilities in the state.
The NBA took the decision while denouncing the murder of Nnaemeka Ugboma, the head of the Ejemekwuru traditional court in Imo State’s Oguta Local Government Area.
On the grounds of the Ejemekwuru customary court, Ugboma was brutally murdered on Thursday afternoon by as yet unidentified attackers in full view of other courtgoers.
The NBA expressed shock at the brutal killing of Ugboma, noting that it is the most recent in a string of fatal assaults on innocent people, including judges and attorneys, in what has become a disturbing trend.
Yakubu Maikyau, SAN, the president of the NBA, stated in a statement that was provided to Switch Nigeria by Akorede Lawal, the national publicity secretary, that the NBA is committed to determining the cause of Ugboma’s murder and will make sure that those responsible are promptly brought to justice.
According to an eyewitness testimony, Mr. Ugboma had barely finished presiding over the proceedings when his assassins arrived in large groups, took everyone’s phones, surrounded Mr. Ugboma, and shot him in the head.
However, Maikyau has instructed the Imo State branches to speak with the Imo State and other security authorities regarding this regrettable occurrence.
According to Lawal, “The NBA has also approved that the branches take every legal action to draw the State Government’s attention to this attack on innocent persons, including members of the state’s legal profession.
“The NBA President expresses condolences to the Nnaemeka Ugboma family and the Imo State Judiciary over this terrible occurrence.”
