The new head coach of the Super Eagles, Jose Peseiro has assured Nigerians that he is here to win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The 62-year-old Portuguese said this after he was presented to Sunday Dare, the Minister of Youth and Sports Development.
On 29 December 2021, Peseiro reached a verbal agreement with the Nigeria Football Federation to replace Gernot Rohr at the helm of the national team. He was supposed to travel to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, but strictly as an “observer” while interim manager Augustine Eguavoen led the side to the last 16, but the deal eventually fell through, as Eguavoen was retained at the end of the tournament.
On 15 May 2022, Peseiro was finally appointed as the new head coach.
Peseiro was in charge of Nigeria’s 1:2 loss to Mexico in a friendly, in what was his first game in charge.
And in his second game, another friendly, he led the team to another 0-1 loss to Ecuador on 3rd June in the U.S.
His first competitive game will come up tomorrow, Thursday in Abuja. This is when they step out against the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone for their first match of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers.
“I came here for one goal. I want to win the next AFCON for my fantastic players and for Nigerians.
“I am confident because I believe in this team. I believe in the quality and the number of good players.
“I have followed Nigeria’s history in football from the 1994 and other successful teams. I want to bring joy back to Nigerians,” Peseiro said.
