A man by the name of Matthew Samuel has allegedly hacked his wife and mother of his two kids, Mercy Samuel to death after a disagreement.
According to sources, the incident took place around the Vom area of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, where the couple live.
The late Mercy, 23, allegedly had her abdomen ripped apart and her intestines cut by Mr. Samuel during a fight on 17th April, 2022. The husband has been on the run since.
Even though Mr. Samuel fled with the phone to prevent her from calling for help, she was eventually rushed to Bingham University Teaching Hospital, where she later died.
According to the Punch, the State Project Officer, Women’s Right Advancement and Protection Alternative, WRAPA, Jummai Madaki, the deceased has been a victim of abuse and beatings at the hands of the husband, claims Mr. Samuel’s family all denied. Madaki added that she was trying to raise support for the deceased before her passing.
Madaki explained, “There had been some violence against her in the past as confirmed by her family but the husband’s family denied any violence. The man ripped open her tummy, remove her intestine and cut it before he disappeared with her phone so she could not call for help.
“They live in a small apartment so I wonder why no one heard her scream, we were told help did not come until the early hours of Monday when she was rushed to the hospital and placed on oxygen. An informant called my attention to the incident and we raise an alarm. Surprisingly, the matter was not reported to the police. We were told by her parents that even as recent as last year, she was home due to some issues but the husband’s people came to beg and she went back.”
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Rebecca Sambo said, “The police have been informed and action has commenced ensuring the young girl gets justice.”
She urged women to speak up and not die in silence when faced with domestic violence.
