Legendary football commentator John Motson popularly known as Motty has passed away at the age of 77.
Motson worked at BBC Sport for 50 years, covering more than 2,000 games across his illustrious career and commentated on 10 World Cups, 10 European Championships and 29 FA Cup finals for the BBC.
A statement from Motson’s family said: “It is with great sadness we announce that John Motson OBE died peacefully in his sleep today.”
Motson gained popularity in 1972, four years after joining the BBC as a freelance pundit, by covering Ronnie Radford’s iconic FA Cup goal for Hereford in their shocking victory over Newcastle.
He also provided commentary for two Olympic events and Wimbledon’s historic victory over Liverpool in the 1988 FA Cup final at Wembley. In 2001, he received the OBE for his broadcasting contributions.
The match between Crystal Palace and West Bromwich Albion was Motson’s final for Match of the Day in 2018.
