The Nigerian Under 17 Women team, the Flamingos, booked a place in their first ever semifinal with a win against USA in Navi, Mumbai on Friday.
The girls qualified for the quarter finals after they beat Chile in the last round.
It was a nervy game, in which the two sides played out a 1:1 draw in normal time, forcing the game to be decided on penalties.
Nigerian took the leader through Josephine Edafe, who converted from the penalty spot.
The Flamingos continued absorbing pressure from the relentless Americans but were unable to keep Amalia Martina Villarreal from getting a very much deserved equaliser.
The game would eventually go into penalties after neither side could get the winner. And it was Nigeria that won the shootout.
They will now face either Tanzania or Colombia in the semifinal of this year’s FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
