Barcelona fell to a defeat on Sunday when they travelled to Santiago Bernabeu to take on their eternal rivals, Real Madrid in this season’s first El Clasico.
Karim Benzema opened the scoring in the 12th minute after Ter Stegen parried an initial Vinicius Junior strike unto the path of the French man who tucked in to get his side going.
The Madridstas doubled their lead ten minutes before the break when Vinicius drove forward on his own to take on the Barca defence. Support eventually arrived, and he freed up Mendy, who in turn found Valverde, who smashed a low effort beyond the reach of Ter Stegen and into the bottom corner to make it 2-0, despite a flurry of Barcelona chances in between.
Barca finally got their breakthrough with just 7 minutes left on the clock when Fati drove down the left before squaring to Lewandowski, who, knowing he was not in a position to shoot, flicked it onto Torres, who stroke the ball into the far corner!!! A very well-worked goal it was, and it’s one that reduced Real’s lead, and made it game on at 2-1!
Madrid restored their 2-goal lead late on when Rodrygo stepped inside Garcia, who caught him with a trailing leg, and that was enough evidence for the referee to award Los Blancos the spot kick, which Rodrygo converted.
Real Madrid have now won 5 of the last encounters between the two.
