A community in Ogbor-Nguru – Nwankwo in the Aboh Mbaise local government area of Imo State, was on Thursday thrown into confusion when gunmen attacked a bullion van.
The incident, it was confirmed happened around the popular General Hospital, Ogbor-Nguru at about 1:30pm.
According to a journalist, Kennedy Onwunali who saw the event as it unfolded, said the driver of the van was returning to Owerri from Mbiase when the gunmen attacked.
“In a bid to rob the van, the robbers ambushed the driver, such that the vehicle somersaulted and crashed into other parked vehicles. It is a miracle he didn’t die,” he said.
The bank behind the bullion van is yet to be known but the exchange of gunfire caused people around to run for their lives.
Police spokesperson of Imo State, Michael Abattam, confirmed the incident but added that information is still scanty.
Abattam said: “Sketchy information revealed that the bullion van was returning after delivering money and was attacked by hoodlums. The driver on noticing it, tried to escape. Unfortunately, his vehicle capsized. No money was carted away please,” adding that further details will follow soon.
