Nigerian Premier Football League champions Rivers United recorded a 0-1 away win to move top of Caf confederation cup group B on Sunday night.
A second half strike from Ghanaian midfielder Paul Acquah at the Estádio 11 de Novembro in Luanda, Angola sealed all three points for the Pride of Rivers.
The Rivers state based team who came off a 3-0 win over ASEC Mimosas in Uyo on Matchday two, started the Matchday three encounter on the front foot but went a man down before the break after left back Gideon Duru was sent off for receiving a second yellow card, having earlier been booked in the 29th minute.
Despite the first half red card, Rivers United got into the lead on the 52nd minute of the match through Paul Acquah who pounced into a loose ball in the box to give the away side a 1-0 lead.
The Dr Congo side then made several attempts to get into the game however, Rivers United defended deep to hold on as they recorded their very first win over a Dr Congo side away from home and go top of group B with six points from a possible nine.
Also, Rivers United are the 4th Nigerian club to win in DR Congo after Bendel United (1989), Enyimba FC (2006) & Warri Wolves (2015). All of the 4 wins ended in the same scoreline (0-1).
