2021/2022 Nigeria Premier Football League champions Rivers United were beaten 3-0 in a Caf confederation cup group B fixture in Congo Brazzaville on Sunday.
The match which was the opener in group B saw the only Nigerian representatives in Africa this season chopped three quick goals in eight first half minutes as the host got their Caf confederation cup campaign to a winning start.
After a cagey start to the game, the host got their noses in front through Congolese Carl Wunda on the half hour mark.
Jaures Maudsly Ngombe doubled the hosts tally two minutes later before Samy Farnese made it three from the penalty spot for the hosts in the 37th minute to take the game to a 3-0 scoreline at halftime.
River United’s Left back Gideon Duru threw away a penalty kick three minutes before the hour mark through a goalkeeper save.
Rivers united pushed to redeem themselves but the scoreline had already gone beyond repair as the Nigerian champion fell to their first continental defeat this season.
While the other game in group B saw AES Mimosas played a goalless draw at home to DC Motema Pembe which leaves the pride of Rivers button in group B.
