Nwachukwu Divine of Benin based club, Bendel Insurance has been called up to the Super Eagles Squad for the first time ahead of their 2023 AFCON qualifiers against Sierra Leone in Monrovia on June the 18th.
The 20-year-old midfielder has been one of the stars at the ongoing NPFL Super Six championship playoffs in Lagos as his side Bendel Insurance are aiming to clinch the league title for the first time since 1979 and also a place in the continental for the first time since 2005.
Nwachukwu Divine is no stranger to the National team as he was part of the Nigerian U-17 side that participated at the FIFA U-17 World Cup which was played in Brazil.
The Golden Eaglets’ campaign did not go well as they were eliminated from the competition in the quarterfinals after falling to the Netherlands; nonetheless, the graduate of Adoration FC was rewarded with a transfer to NNL team Bendel Insurance a year later.
Since returning to the NPFL this season, Nwachukwu Divine has featured for the Benin Arsenals on 20 occasions scoring once in the regular season and two goals in three appearances for the two-time NPFL winners at the ongoing Super Six.
Aside from his stellar performance for his team in Lagos, the attacking midfielder from Enugu also scored both goals for Bendel Insurance at the Onikan stadium.
Divine’s long range strike in the seventh minute handed Bendel Insurance the lead on Matchday two against sunshine stars while his second of the playoffs came in Matchday three against Enyimba FC through a 37th minute equalizer which earned them a point against the league’s record champions.
His call up to the Super Eagles by Portuguese journeyman Jose Peseiro who has been in attendance for the last three Match Days in Lagos is no surprise to many as Divine and goalkeeper Amas Obasogie have been the two standouts players for the Benin Arsenals at the playoffs.
Nwachukwu Divine wasn’t the only Super six player called up to the Super Eagles as Rivers United goalkeeper Victor Sochima, Enyimba FC goalie Olorunleke Ojo and Chidiebube Duru of Rivers United also made the cut.
