Two sisters, Dr. Lila Amouri and Susan Frazier, who is a nurse committed suicide on February 11 in Switzerland, after they paid $11,000 (Naira equivalent of over 4.5 million) each to have themselves killed.
Amouri who is 54 and her sister, Susan, who is 49 both lived in Arizona, USA until they moved to Basel to be assisted in killing themselves, deceiving colleagues that they were on vacation.
According to Dr. Philip Nitschke, founder of Exit International, an international nonprofit that advocates for legalizing voluntary euthanasia and assisted suicide, the sisters called him in October of 2020 to inquire how they could become members and learn how to terminate their lives.
He told dailymail.com that assisted euthanasia is prohibited in the USA, and only 11 states are allowed to conduct the procedure, but only if the patient is suffering a terminal illness with only six months to live.
The sisters then opted to travel out in order to end their lives. The scheduled date for their death was to be August 2021, but due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, they were unable to make it then. Until February 2022 when they were finally able to make it to Pegasos Clinic in Switzerland, since it does not require patients to be terminally ill or suffering from a life-limiting illness.
Exit together with Pegasos Director Reudi Habegger, said: “Pegasos Swiss Association is committed to ensuring that adults capable of judgement can exercise their right to a self-determined, humane death.
“After careful clarifications and within the framework of the official rules, we respectfully accompany people with unbearable suffering on their last journey.”
According to Dailymail.com, the late sisters have an elder brother Cal, who is 60, who they also didn’t inform about their plan to die beside each other.
Authorities in the United States are investigating the case to ascertain if the conductors of the assisted suicide had ulterior motives or if the sisters were in their right minds.
