After a teenage guy named Uchenna Okafor, who had been detained by police in the state’s Akwuzu Police Division after being caught in Awka for fighting, purportedly passed away there, the Anambra State Police Command announced that it had opened an investigation into the incident.
According to a source, @A mummyya, a social justice activist and proponent of gender rights, who posted information on Uchenna’s murder on Twitter, the dead was detained together with two other people for fighting and transferred to the Awkuzu Police Division.
When the parents visited the police station last Tuesday, they were reportedly told to come on Thursday since the Investigating Police Officer in charge of the matter was not there. The parents had been asked to post N50,000 each as bail.
Three guys were detained by @PoliceNG for fighting in Awka, she added, before being sent to Awkuzu SARS. When their parents visited them last week, they were informed of the situation and told they had to make a N150,000 damage payment.
“The parents are still scavenging for cash. Uchenna Okafor’s parents visited him on Tuesday, January 3, and they attempted to pay their N50,000 portion and post bail, but they were told to come back on Thursday since the IPO doesn’t operate on Wednesday and wasn’t available.”
When reached, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the public relations officer for the Anambra State Police, informed SaharaReporters that the case was being looked into.
“The situation is being investigated.” The command has summoned the IPO handling the case and has also extended an invitation to the victim’s relatives.
“I’m looking into it, and I’ll update you on the situation, please.”
