Yakubu Maikyau (SAN), the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, refutes the notion that lawyers impede the fight against corruption, asserting that it is a false narrative.
Speaking at the National AML/CFT/CPF Compliance Retreat organized by the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, Maikyau emphasized that combating money laundering and terrorism financing requires adherence to existing legislation.
He further stated that there is no evidence to support a broad generalization suggesting the legal profession’s involvement in any complicity justifying such claims.
He said: “As a matter of fact, those who feed such narrative are the ones who either work against or ignore the right measures needed to be deployed or adopted to succeed in this fight.
“The NBA will not allow or in any way subscribe to any arrangement that will subject the legal profession to the regulatory control of third parties.”
