The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III has passed on and will be buried today according to Islamic rites.
The traditional ruler died late on Friday night at Afe Babalola University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti, aged 83.
His first son, Prince Tunde confirmed that the family of the Late Alaafin received his remains on Saturday morning.
Three key Oyo State Monarchs have joined their ancestors within five months.
First, it was Soun of Ogbomoso, Late Jimoh Oyewunmi who died in December 2021. Then Olubadan of Ibadan, Late Oba Saliu Adetunji followed in January 2022.
And now, Alaafin of Oyo, Late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, April 2022. Before he passed, he was the longest reigning monarch, haven ruled for 52 years. He was born on October 15, 1938.
He succeeded Alaafin Gbadegesin Ladigbolu II in 1970 and was crowned on January 14, 1971.
According to tradition, the head of the Oyomesi, Basorun of Oyo, High Chief Yusuf Ayoola, would take over pending the appointment of a new Alaafin.
Basorun is also expected to brief the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, before an official announcement.
