Ondo State’s Governor Rotimi Akeredolu said on Saturday that a “Memorial Park” will be built in honour of the victims of the Owo tragedy in the state.
Recall that more than 40 Christians attending mass at the St. Francis Catholic Church on Owaluwa Street in the Owo neighbourhood were murdered in June 2022.
The massacre shook Nigeria and the entire world, sparking outrage from the populace and condemnation from national and international organisations.
However, Akeredolu made the statement during a tour of the construction site that the park was being erected as a sign of respect that would also enable the state to perpetually remember the soul of the deceased worshippers.
He also declared that his administration was committed to not forgetting the victims of the gunmen’s massacre.
The governor said: “For us, we are determined not to forget the souls that have departed. They were 41 in number. And others that are still nursing the wounds, although they have gone back to their homes, have been discharged, and some of them are outpatients.
“So, for us, it is just a way of remembering those 41 souls that died.”
He also assured that the park would be completed before the end of May 2023.
