Rotimi Akeredolu, the Governor of Ondo State, asserted that by paying the employees as and when due, his administration had kept its word not to owe them any wages in the state.
According to him, state employees had received their paychecks up through November 2022, but the delay in the December salary was the result of the state’s labour leaders’ recommendation to give employees time to meet their financial responsibilities for the new year.
Akeredolu made this statement during the annual prayer gathering of state employees on Tuesday, the first day of the new year, at the governor’s office in Akure, the state’s capital.
Addressing the workers, the Governor said, “As you are aware, you received three alerts in December. We paid for October and November 2022. You also received a leave bonus. We would have paid in December but the labour leaders advised that we delay it till January to allow you to meet financial obligations. students will resume soon. We will pay school fees.
“Also, we inherited seven months’ salary arrears, we paid six months. Before I leave the office, I will pay the remaining one, ” he concluded.
