Abia State Government Reports Over N200 Million Monthly Wage Bill Reduction through Worker Verification.
The State Accountant General, Njum Onyemenam, announced that significant savings have been achieved through the ongoing verification process of civil servants and public workers in Abia State.
Utilizing a unified payment system, the government has already saved over N200 million per month. Onyemenam, speaking after a meeting with Governor Dr Alex Otti, stated that the verification exercise is still in progress, with the government aiming for additional savings in the future.
The Accountant General said: “So far, we have been able to save N220 million from the ongoing verification of workers in the state, local governments, and pensioners.
“Not less than 2,300 ghost names have been weeded out of the payrolls, using the unified payment system and we hope to still identify more as we continue with the exercise.”
As confirmed by the State Accountant General, it has been acknowledged that the Abia State Government, under the directive of Governor Otti, recently cleared the outstanding April salaries left unpaid by the previous administration. Additionally, the government disbursed June pensions to retirees.
Addressing the issue of local government staff who missed out on their June salaries due to the non-submission of verified payment schedules, Onyemenam assured them that they will receive their salaries this week.
