The 2022 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to be the 22nd running of the FIFA World Cup competition.
The quadrennial international men’s football championship contested by the senior national teams of the member associations of FIFA.
Nigeria failed to qualify for the World Cup this time and will therefore miss out in Qatar. Ghana qualified in their stead.
It is scheduled to take place in Qatar from 20 November to 18 December 2022.
Here are some facts about the 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup.
- This is the first ever winter World Cup- the FIFA World Cup is usually held in the summer months of June and July but exceptions had to be made for Qatar, due to the extremely high temperatures that Middle East Country experiences during that time of the year. So it will instead hold in the last two months of the year.
- It is the most expensive- to construct roads, hotels and stadiums, Qatar will be spending over $200 billion. That figure far eclipses anything before it.
- Fewest number of stadiums- this year’s World Cup tournament will be played in the fewest venues- just 8. Of the 8, only one has been renovated. The other 7 have been built from the ground up. This number of 8 is the lowest in recent FIFA World Cups.
- Air conditioned stadiums- as earlier mentioned about the high temperatures the nation of Qatar experiences, the organisers have come up with a genius plan, namely to air condition all 8 stadiums. This is the first time such will happen.
- The most commutable- being a small country, Qatar has most of its host cities in close proximity and as such, movement between venues won’t be an issue.
- The second World Cup on Asian soil- this will be the second time the showpiece will be hosted by an Asian nation. THE first was in 2002, when Japan and South Korea co-hosted it.
