Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has blamed poor pitch conditions in Nigeria for Super Eagles recent home results.
Just last week, the Super Eagles of Nigeria lost to the wild dogs of Guinea Bissau in a Matchday three AFCON qualifiers fixture in Abuja 1-0.
A game which has got the fans left divided in their opinions despite the three-time African champions winning the reverse fixture with the same scoreline three days later with some fans attributing the defeat to the poor state of the MKO Abiola Stadium pitch while others fault the players.
The 25-year-old Everton player who won the best midfielder of the year award for 2022 at the Nigerian Pitch Awards made the revelation during an interview.
“For example our pitch, we don’t know if we are going to have a nice pitch when we play (laughs). Obviously we got a new coach now and we played Sierra Leone but we just about beat them 2-1, ohh difficult game then we played Sao Tome and beat them 10 nil that we played on a great pitch.
In the interview, Iwobi also claimed that players from the Eagles team are not friends with these pitches in Nigeria due to the fact that they play in great pitches in Europe.
“A lot of us play in Europe now so we play on great pitches that it is easy to just manipulate the ball and play freely. If we have that in Nigeria I feel like it will be difficult to beat us and I am confident enough to say that not many teams can beat us. To start with an example like we having a good pitch I feel like we’ll be unstoppable.
“It is just a pitch of grass”, he concluded when asked of the pitch conditions “it’s just a pitch of grass, leveled grass no cut like just grass in it.”
