Mitoma dumps Liverpool out of FA Cup

After a thrilling cup tie, it is Brighton who get their name into the hat for the fifth round as they beat the holders 2-1 and end their defence of the trophy.

Mitoma in 7th heaven.

The Seagulls found themselves a goal behind on 30 minutes, when Elliott scored for the second straight FA Cup game to put Klopp’s side in front. But the hosts hit back through Dunk, who deflected Lamptey’s long-range shot into the back of the net to send the teams into half-time level.

The second half was a tight affair, but in the dying seconds, Mitoma showed brilliant composure to bring down a cross before finishing past Alisson to win the game for Brighton.

Brighton have now lost only one of their last eight FA Cup games played at home (W6 D1), while this is the first time they’ve beaten the holders of the competition, losing both previous such games.

In the current format of the competition (since 1925-26), only Wolves (30) and Sheffield United (28) have been eliminated more times in the fourth round than Liverpool (27), with the Reds losing five of their last seven such ties.

Brighton’s Lewis Dunk has now scored two goals against Liverpool and two own goals for the Reds (4 in total), with those combined more than against any other side in all competitions for the Seagulls.
