EPL: Nketiah’s last-minute winner sends Arsenal five points clear at the top

Arsenal produced an elite performance to beat Manchester United 3-2 at the Emirates stadium on Sunday night.

The league leaders have been almost perfect since the season resumed after the World Cup break and know the best-case scenario if they record a victory this afternoon and Manchester City are beaten at home by Wolves is an eight-point lead at the top of the table.

Mikel Arteta’s team started the evening on the front foot but fell to a shock lead through Marcus Rashford who scored with a great individual effort in the 17th minute.

Eddie Nketiah then restored parity for the host after meeting a Granit Xhaka’s cross, beating De Gea with a brilliant header from close range as the home team drew level into the break.

Bukayo Saka completed the comeback for Arsenal in the 53rd minute after a beautiful finish from just outside the box into the button right corner, giving Arsenal the lead for the first time 2-1.

World Cup winner, Lisandro Martinez leveled matters for Manchester United after bouncing on a loose ball in the six yard box with a header six minutes later.

Eddie Nketiah scored his second and Arsenal’s third in the 90th minute. The England U21 record goalscorer pounds on a deflected short from Martin Ødegaard with a backheel flick which beat de Gea.

Victory for Arsenal puts them five points above Manchester City with a game in hand while Manchester United now sit 11 points behind Arsenal who also have a game in hand.

The gunners have now gathered 50 points in the first half of a league season for the first time in the club’s history.
