CBN chief Emefiele secretly returns to Nigeria

Nigeria’s embattled Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, quietly returned to the country on Wednesday.

Since leaving the nation several weeks ago, Mr. Emefiele has avoided being detained by agents of the State Security Service (SSS), who are looking into a number of claims against him, including allegations of corruption and funding for terrorism.

However, a source close to the administration claimed that the CBN governor had obtained President Muhammadu Buhari’s approval for the two weeks of leave, which ended on Tuesday.

“His vacation was over yesterday, thus today is his first day back to work,” our source added.

As a result of the ongoing power struggle at the top of the Nigerian government, we also learned that Mr. Emefiele intends to leave the country once more very soon. He is worried that the secret police may finally detain him.

As of Thursday morning, Garba Shehu, the senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, and Osita Nwanisobi, the spokeswoman for the Central Bank of Nigeria, had not returned calls or texts addressing the situation.
