Southampton upset Manchester City 2-0 in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup at Saint Mary’s on Wednesday night to reach the semi-finals.
Southampton’s new boss Nathan Jones, who has been on a six-game losing streak since taking charge of the club in December ended the run with a third round Fa cup win over Crystal Palace last Saturday.
After having to defend for the first 20 minutes, Southampton got themselves in front in the 23rd minute after Lyanco played a long ball into the feet of Sekou Mara who hit a tremendous first time short into the bottom right corner to give the host the lead 1-0.
Mali international Midfielder Moussa Djenepo then extended Southampton’s lead minutes later by clipping a brilliant lop over Manchester City’s goalkeeper Stefan Ortega.
The host then held on despite the introduction of Erling Haaland, Kelvin De Bruyne and Rodri in the second half as they inflicted defeat on Pep Guardiola’s City.
Victory for Southampton puts them in the last four alongside Manchester United, Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest as the four teams left in the tournament.
While Pep Guardiola’s lost his first domestic quarter final game as a manager, as Manchester City add to their January worries with their next game will be a meeting with rivals Manchester United on Saturday.
