Tomori, Abraham & other Nigerians who missed out on England’s World Cup roster

Nigerian forward, Tammy Abraham will not be going to 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup.

In the official list released by Gareth Southgate on Thursday afternoon, the Roma forward will miss out.

Abraham whose full name is Kevin Oghenetega Tamaraebi Bakumo-Abraham, represents England even though he is born of Nigerian parents.

But he is not the only Nigerian missing in the official list. AC Milan defender, Fikayo Tomori is another notable absence.

Bukayo Saka is the only Nigerian that will be on the plane to the Middle East.

The likes of Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise also missed out. Olise was born in England to a Nigerian father and French-Algerian mother, and is eligible to represent France, Algeria, England or Nigeria internationally. In March 2021, Olise was named as a standby for the Nigeria squad taking part in their Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin and Lesotho. France didn’t pick him either.

His Palace teammate, Eberechi Eze was also not picked.

One would argue that the club form of most of the aforementioned has not been great. However, Tomori has been stellar at club level, and even better than palpable Manchester United centre back, Harry Maguire, who made the squad.

The young Nigerians plying their trade in England and who have their sights set on playing for the Three Lions must do so using Gabriel Agbonlahor and Charlton Cole as templates.
