AFCON| Nigeria maintains 100% run as Moses Simon shines in victory

The Super Eagles became the first side in this year’s Africa Cup of Nations to win all their group games.

The Austin Eguavoen-led side waited till the second half to take the lead, after Umar Sadiq spurned some good chances early on. The CF Almeria forward however later redeemed himself with a well taken goal.

He was substituted just moments after his goal, with Moses Simon coming on. Simon, who has been Nigeria’s talisman right from the game against the Pharaohs, again impressed, dribbling half of Guinea Bissau’s backline before hitting the post with his effort.

However, Watford’s Troost-Ekong was on hand to turn in the rebound. The referee had ruled the goal out for offside, but the VAR gave it after a lengthy check.

For only the second time in their history, Nigeria have won all 3 group games in AFCON. The first time was in 2006, when current coach Augustine Eguavoen was in charge.

Guinea Bissau had vowed before the game that they would rather die than let the Super Eagles defeat them. It remains to be seen if they kick the bucket.

Egypt finished second in the group after a rather unconvincing win over Sudan.
