Ernest Shonekan, Nigeria’s former interim Head of State dies @ 85

Chief Ernest Adegunle Oladeinde Shonekan GCFR has died.

The late lawyer who was titled Abese of Egbaland from 1981, died in Lagos on Tuesday and was aged 85.


The octogenarian served as interim Head of State of Nigeria from 26 August 1993 till he was ousted by Late General Sani Abacha on 17 November 1993, via a military coup.

He took charge of the country on interim basis after General Ibrahim Babangida stepped down, but refused to hand over power to democratically elected president, MKO Abiola.

Shonekan who hails from Abeokuta in Ogun State, got his law degree from University of London.
