The Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari has urged the Super Eagles to go into the African Cup of Nation’s knowing that the whole country is behind them.
Mr. President made this known via Sunday Dare, the Sports Minister, when he hosted them to a send forth party at the State House on Tuesday.
The Super Eagles, now led by Austin Eguavoen after the sacking of German tactician, Gernot Rohr, will depart Nigeria on Wednesday for the continental showpiece which starts on Sunday, 9th January, 2022.
“We have been champions three times and at other times we have won silver and bronze medals. But we want to win the gold again this time,” a statement by Clem Agba, Minister of State for Budget and National Planning.
“We have followed your preparations for this tournament and have seen the challenges that you have faced with the late release from your clubs, the Covid-19 protocols, injuries and other factors,” it added.
“We urge you to rather see these obstacles as a stepping stone to your success and glory by demonstrating the Nigerian spirit of determination, focus, resilience, discipline and conquest on and off the pitch.”
The Super Eagles will square off against seven time champions, Egypt on Tuesday when the competition opens in Cameroon.
