Messi, who currently plays for Paris Saint-Germain, defeats Bayern Munich Striker, Robert Lewandowski, Karim Benzema and Manchester United star, Cristiano Ronaldo to win the coveted trophy.

Lewandowski came second behind Messi.

Ronaldo has only 5 Ballon d’Or trophies.

Messi became the favourite to win the trophy after he led Argentina to win the COPA America earlier this year, despite one of his less impressive years at club level: Barcelona finished third in La Liga and fell in the first knockout round of the Champions League.

However, Messi scored two goals as Barca won the Copa del Rey final and he was La Liga’s top goalscorer once more, before switching to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.

Lewandowski was widely expected to win last year’s award before it was cancelled as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Chelsea’s Jorginho was another candidate that was considered for the award, having won the Champions League with his club and Euro 2020 with his country Italy a couple of months later.

The award ceremony also has eighth place as Kevin de Bruyne of Man City and Belgium, Liverpool and Egypt’s Mohamed Salah is in seventh and sixth goes to Cristiano Ronaldo of Man United and Portugal.

5th – N’Golo Kante, Chelsea and France

4th – Karim Benzema, Real Madrid and France

3rd – Jorginho, Chelsea and Italy
