JAILBREAK: Equip prison wardens with machine guns- Reps tell FG

The House of Representatives on Thursday called on the Federal Government to equip prison wardens with machine guns in order to curb prison break.

The lawmakers arrived at this decision after a motion moved by Kazaure Gudaje (APC, Jigawa) on Thursday during plenary.

Gudaje had earlier cried out over the incessant attacks on the nation’s prisons.

In addition to the general purpose machine guns (GPMG) they recommended, the House also asked the Federal Government to electrify all fences and also install CCTV cameras across the facilities.

“Correctional Centres are where convicted criminals are kept to make the society safe, thus it is dangerous for such convicts to be let loose,” he said.

He also asked the House to “urge the federal government to take over the payment of electricity bills of the Correctional Centres in Nigeria or exempt the Centres from paying electricity bills.

Gudaje said those who break into prisons often wield AK-47 rifles so it would only make sense to equip prison wardens with automatic rifles.

He urged the House to mandate the Committee on Appropriations to include the rehabilitation and upgrade of the Correctional Centres in the 2022 budget estimates.
