Ronaldo fails to inspire as Serbia qualify for Qatar World Cup at Portugal’s expense

Portugal missed the chance to qualify for the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup when they took on Serbia in Monday night’s qualifying game.

Renato Sanches gave the Portuguese the lead in the 2nd minute of the game. However, Tadic equalised 12 minutes from the break.

However, with Portugal needing at least a point to book an automatic spot in Qatar, they failed to turn up and were for large swathes of the game second best.

Serbia who needed a win kept pushing, as Fernando Sancho’s men sat back to defend the stalemate. And on the 90th minute mark, substitute Aleksandr Mitrovic gave Serbia the lead.

Mitrovic of Fulham could not help but pull off his shirt to celebrate the victory.

The game ended 1:2, as Serbia booked their place at the World Cup. Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates however, will have to battle it out at the playoffs, haven finished second in Group A above Ireland, Luxembourg and Azerbaijan.
