Plateau Assembly Speaker, Abok Ayuba Impeached

The Plateau State House of Assembly, has impeached the Speaker of the house, Rt.Hon. Abok Ayuba.

Ayuba was impeached on Thursday by 8 out of the 24 members of the House.

The house, in an unusual sitting on Thursday, and presided by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Hon. Saleh Yipmong, took the decision.

The House thereafter elected Hon. Yakubu Sanda as the new speaker.

Reports say Ayuba has been under some sort of tension since the unrest in the state, particularly in some communities in Jos North and Bassa LGA, where several people were killed, many injured and others displaced from their ancestral homes.

Also, a two-week ultimatum was given to Governor Simon Lalong, to take action on the resolutions forwarded to him on “security matters and how to restore peace in the State.”

The assembly also urged Lalong to come up with a statement defending the citizenry in the wake of the myriad of security challenges that had engulfed the state.

The eight members of the assembly were said to have gained access to the house as early as 6am to carry the action. Also they had the cover heavily armed security personnel.

An attempt to impeach the speaker was carried out on Wednesday night, although it was unsuccessful.

A member of the house under the platform of the PDP, Hon. Nanbol Daniel, representing Langtang North Central said that the impeachment would not hold because it did not follow the House rules on impeachment of speaker and deputy speaker.

As of Wednesday morning, a petition by a group under the aegis of Youths Rights Against Corruption (YRAC) accusing the Speaker of corruption had started to circulate on social media.

According to YRAC, it has submitted a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against the Speaker, accusing him of several allegations, including abuse of office and financial misappropriation.

The group also demanded that the speaker should immediately step down from his position pending the completion of investigation.

Executive Director, YRAC Comrade Abednego Musa, signed the petition titled: “Petition Against Plateau State House of Assembly Speaker, Nuhu Abok Ayuba, On Gross Financial Misconduct, Criminal Breach Of Public Trust And Abuse Of Office”.

There is no reaction from the embattled speaker on this development at the time of this report.
