A cash crops market in a Sokoto state community has been reportedly attacked by unknown gunmen, with no fewer than 40 persons left dead.
It was gathered that the gunmen raided the market where onions are predominantly sold and opened fire, as people there scrambled for their lives.
According to the village chief, the gunmen came around 4:30pm, when the local vigilante were on a mission to hunt down another group of insurgents.
He said so far about 42 corpses have been documented, but that the death toll may still rise as many people sustained differing degree of gunshot wounds.
He added that the killers must have attacked after they got word that the vigilante were out of the community.
