Four out of six South South Governors have taken sides with Governor Nyesom Wike and Rivers State as he heads to the Supreme Court over Value Added Tax saga.
Only Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River failed to show up at the meeting held in Port Harcourt on Monday, where the 5 Governors met to iron out matters of utmost importance.
It can be recalled that the FIRS had approached the National Assembly, asking for the power to collect consumption taxes be stripped from states and exclusively given to the them.
Wike had then gone ahead to drag the matter before the apex court, as the constitution allows states, not the Federal Government to collect VAT.
In a statement signed by the chairman of the South South Governors Forum, and Governor of Delta, Ifeanyi Okowa, the forum said, “We Unequivocally support the decision for states to collect value added tax, and resolved to join the suit before the Supreme court.”
