ECOWAS Suspends Guinea’s Membership Following Coup

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has decided to suspend Guinea, after the country fell to a military coup d’etat on Monday.

According to a statement released on Wednesday, the regional body is set to send a delegation to Guinea for talks. They hope to restore democracy in the country where ousted President Alpha Conde became synonymous with corruption, haven changed the Constitution to allow him run for a third term.

“The authority expresses deep concern over the political developments in the Republic of Guinea following the coup d’etat of September 5, 2021 and their consequences for regional peace and stability,” the statement said in part.

It also demanded the immediate restoration of civilian rule in Guinea, adding that the “defense and security forces should maintain a constitutional posture.”
